Reference Number MS FRAG/GERM/5
TitleCharter [Fragments]
Date1440
DescriptionCharter recording a mortgage for a house, cut into two pieces for use as book binding material. On parchment. Text in dark brown-black ink in a Gothic cursive hand. Most of the text appears to be present if the two pieces are laid side by side but the edges of f.2 have been roughly cut and some pieces are missing from the top two lines. In a German dialect, possibly Middle Franconian. Also includes a 19th/20th century transcription of the text (4ff).

There is a marginal annotation on f.1r, upside down to the main text, in Latin, indicating that this fragment may have been bound into a copy of the Gospel of Matthew. On f.2v there is a very faded annotation, also in Latin, in a different hand to the other.
Main body text in black ink with large initial 'I' at the start of the text.
Extent2 fragments plus transcription 4ff.
