Description | Single parchment leaf, probably from a missal. Has been used as the cover of a book and was trimmed down to size; the bottom of the leaf has been cut away. The recto is more legible than the verso and includes lines 4 and 5 from Psalm 118, also lines 2-5 of Paul's Second Epistle to the Romans and possibly a paraphrase of Matthew Chapter II. Main body text is a rounded Gothic bookhand in black with rubrics in red and large initials alternating red and blue, and occasional red highlights. There is a large flourished initial letter 'O' in red with blue detail visible on the verso. Original line rulings also visible. There are several later manuscript annotations: on the recto, upside down to the main text, is an ink annotation "Germania", possibly 16th century, and the remnants of a label where the top of the spine would have been when the fragment was being used as a book cover. The bottom of the leaf has been folded under, when turned to the verso a label is visible on the folded section which reads "Sum Joannis Stijrselij[?]. LXXV. In Cubito". There is also a pencil annotation on the recto, possibly 20th century? |
