TitleDecretales Gregorii IX [Fragments]
Date13th Century
DescriptionFragments of two leaves from the same manuscript, not consecutive, parchment. The text is from the Decretals of Gregory IX or Decretales Gregorii IX, also known as the Liber Extra, Book III.
Consists of a main body text in black in two columns in a Gothic textualis rotunda surrounded by a marginal gloss in a round script of a lower grade. There is an additional minute gloss and other annotations in various hands which suggests this manuscript was heavily used. The main text has alternating red and blue capitals (plain and decorated), red paragraph marks and rubrics. There are several manicules and drawings of faces made by users of the text.
The leaves have both been cut, with loss of gloss text on both leaves and loss of some of the main text from folio 2.
The text on folio 1 is from Book III Part V, beginning with part of Chapter XXV on the recto and ending at Chapter XXIX on the verso. The text on folio 2 is from Book III Parts X - XII, beginning part way through Part X, Chapter VII on the recto. Part XI begins in column B on the recto, indicated by the rubric "De hiis que fuit a maiori parte capituli". Part XII, Chapter I begins in column B on the verso. The text of the rubric marking the start of the chapter has rubbed away in patches but reads "Ut ecclesiastica benefica sine deminutione conferantur".
There is a modern pencil annotation "a14" on f.1r. There are two annotations in ink on f.2r, one has been crossed out, possibly "C.52", and the other is "R.136". Both are upside down to the main text and probably relate to the use of the fragment for binding material.
