TitleBiblical Commentary [Fragments]
Date15th Century?
DescriptionTwo leaves from a Biblical commentary, parchment. From the same manuscript, possibly two halves of a bifolium, although the text is not consecutive. Text in a Gothic bookhand in a single column in brown with red highlights and rubrics.
Folio 1: the recto begins with text from Augustine's Questions on the Gospels [Augustinus Hipponensis, Questiones Evangeliorum], beginning "Sunt enim homines hac perversitate..." and ending at "non ministratum est". The rest of the text on the recto and all of the text on the verso is from Jerome's Commentary on Matthew [Hieronymus, Commentarius in Evangelium Secundum Matthaeum], which is identified by the rubric "Scrivo beati iheronimi de eadem lectione". There is an erasure in the middle of this rubric. The text begins at chapter 5 v.1.
Folio 2: the recto begins with further text from Jerome's Commentary on Matthew although it does not follow continuously from folio 1. The text on this leaf starts at chapter 24 v.48 and ends at v.51. This is followed by a lesson on the Gospel of John, taken from a homily by the Venerable Bede [Homilies on the Gospels, Book 1, Homily VIII]. This continues on the verso.
There is a modern pencil annotation "m19" on f.1r. The remains of what may be an annotation in black ink can be seen in the left-hand margin on f.1v. The first word of the next page, "bella", has been noted by the scribe in the bottom right corner of f.1v. On f.2v there is an annotation in ink at the top of the leaf: "Z5.L7.N5". Possibly a shelfmark or reference number?
