| Description | Bifolium from a religious commentary, possibly an edition of the Epistles of St Jerome, or similar, parchment. Main body text in brown in a single column in a Caroline minuscule, written in a scriptura continua. Words in Greek on f.2r are highlighted with pen strokes above, also in brown.The content of the text is from two epistles, firstly St Jerome's Letter to Algasia [Hieronymus Algasiae], identified in some published editions as Jerome's Epistle 151 (CLI) and others as 121 (CXXI), in which Jerome responds to eleven questions sent to him by Algasia, a woman from Gaul [France]. The other is one of Jerome's letters to Marcella, identified as either 59 (LIX) or 148 (CXLVIII).
Folio 1r, which is on the right-hand side as the bifolium has been flattened, begins in the middle of the letter to Algasia, specifically Jerome's response to question 10: "[Apo]stolum fecisse repperimus. Neque enim sequitur autem vel alia coniunctio...". The word "autem" has been inserted by the scribe above the line. The text continues overleaf to f.1v, ending at "Duos autem esse adventus domini sal[vatoris]".
The text does not continue to f.2r, indicating that this bifolium was not in the centre of a gathering. The top line and part of the second and third lines have been rubbed away, but the visible text begins part way through one of Jerome's letters to Marcella, "Carissimi nunc filii dei sumus et necdum manifestum est...". The text continues on the verso, ending at "cum potuerit primum corrigi quasi incredula et postea non repelli quasi ea".
There is a contemporary annotation in the margin at the bottom on f.2r which has been partly rubbed away but appears to relate to the text. |
