TitleMoralia in Job [Fragments]
Date12th Century
DescriptionTwo non-consecutive folios from a manuscript copy of St Gregory's Commentary on Job (the "Moralia in Job" of Pope Gregory the Great). Main body text in two columns with red rubrics. There are varioius sizes of capitals; red and blue 2-line capitals and ornate 4-line and 6-line capitals in red. There were four 2-line capitals and a 6-line capital Q which were probably green, but the pigment (verdigris) has corroded the parchment. The script is an early Gothic textualis rotunda which still shares many features with earlier Caroline minuscule and protogothic scripts. With marginal annotations probably made by the same scribe, decorated with red pen flourishes.
Folio 1 recto begins in Book 1 chapter 9.13, from "...cogitationis tenebras illustrare..." and ends at chapter 13.17 "...secum detulit, sequacium moribus impressit.". The verso continues with chapter 14.18 "[Quid] in septinario numero nisi summa..." and ends at chapter 15.21 "Culex enim susserando vulnerat camelus autem sponte se..."
Folio 2 recto begins at Book 1 chapter 36.54 "...per cogitationes defluit sed sese intra arcana..." and ends at Book 2 chapter 1.1 "quia ad spei fidutiam virtutis exemplo roboratur / Finis prologus. Incipit liber secundus.". The verso begins with a large decorated initial Q marking the start of Book 2 chapter 2, although the pigment used for the Q has corroded the parchment. The text begins "Quadam die cum venissent filii dei..." and ends at chapter 3.3, "Quod tamen citius solvimus si quante subti[litatis]...".
