Description | Ten strips of parchment manuscripts cut to similar size and shape, probably used to reinforce the spines or as sewing supports / quire guards of later bindings. They all appear to be from Justinian's Codex and Digesta. Some have main body text only, some main text with gloss and some only have gloss text. The main body text is written in an Italian Gothic textualis rotunda bononiensis and the gloss is in a variety of hands, showing that the texts were heavily used. There is also some interlinear annotation on some of the fragments. They all have modern pencil annotations identifying the precise book and chapter, if known. Main body texts written in brown with large red capitals, gloss texts in black and dark brown. Fragments numbers 2, 4, 5 and 8 are from the Codex Justinianus books VII and VIII. Fragments 1, 6 and 7 are from Digesta XIX, XL and L. Fragments 3, 9 and 10 have only gloss text and the original work is not clear. |
CustodialHistory | Found with MS FRAG/LAT/74 housed with the Manuscript Deeds collection. Wrapped with a small note written in purple pencil: "10 Streifen s.XIII". Possibly among the fragments bought at auction in Bonn? |
