TitleGradual [Fragment]
Date15th - 16th Century
DescriptionLeaf from a gradual, parchment. This is a whole leaf that does not appear to have been used as a binding fragment. The main body text in black is in two distinct hands. The first (original) is a Gothic bookhand, similar to a semi-quadrata. There are some unusual letter forms, such as two versions of 'v' and 's', see 'vobis' and 'orantes' on line 4 verso. The scribe also uses a vertical 'm', see 'vorem meam' on lines 4-5 recto. The original text also has red, blue and black capitals and rubrics. The musical notation is square on a 4-line stave ruled in red.
In the second half of the verso there is text and musical notation in a later hand, possibly a mixed hand but with some attempt to copy the original Gothic. This addition is also in black with a red initial 'A'. The second scribe appears to have filled in staves and text-space left blank by the first scribe. Originally 7 lines of text and music were ruled on each side, but the second scribe has added an 8th line at the bottom of the verso.
The two antiphons written by the original scribe are "De profundis" and "Amen dico vobis", the latter of which was used for Communion. The later scribe has added "Alleluia veni regina".
CLXIX is written in red at the top of the verso, this is probably an original page number. The leaf is annotated with the number '182' in black in the top right corner of the recto, which may have been added by the second scribe. A pencil annotation has been rubbed out underneath this, but 17/XI 1907 is still visible. A blue number '7' appears on the verso.
