TitleNoted Breviary [Fragment]
Date12th Century
DescriptionTwo leaves from a noted breviary, parchment. Possibly consecutive leaves although this is unclear. Lessons and chants with musical notation in Germanic neumes. Main body text in a Caroline minuscule in black ink in a single column with red initial capitals, rubrics and highlights. The texts are for the 18th and 21st Sundays after Pentecost and the Summer Histories (Prophets).
Folio 1 recto: The text begins at the end of a reading from II Maccabees 3:9-11 and Ephesians 4:23-24. This is followed by a chant, "Dixit dominus paralitico..." and the collect for the 18th Sunday after Pentecost "Dirigat corda nostra...". The reading that follows is from II Maccabees 9:1-8, which continues on the verso. One line of text has been cut from the bottom of the folio. There is an erasure on line 19 where an 'o' has been removed after the word "caelesti". The word "eum" is missing.
Folio 1 verso: The text continues from the verso with II Maccabees 9:8-13. This is followed by a lesson from Matthew, although the rubric indicates it is from the Second Epistle of John. The last visible line is a chant, "Dicite invitatis ecce..." which is traditionally used on the 21st Sunday after Pentecost.
Folio 2 recto: Text begins with the collect for the 21st Sunday after Pentecost, followed by the rubric "Infra ebdomada" [i.e. during the week] and a reading from II Maccabees 10:1-13. The final line of text is missing from the bottom of the leaf.
Folio 2 verso: The verso begins with a chant: "Vidi dominum sedentem super solium excelsum" from the Summer Histories, Prophets (De Prophetis). This is followed by a lession from Ezechiel 10 with the chant "Aspice domine de sede sancta tua...".
