AdminHistoryBorn Venice, c1596, of Portuguese descent; elected Haham of the Sephardic congregation Bet Ya'akov in Amsterdam, 1616; founder of the congregational school, Keter Torah, in the highest class of which he taught Talmud and Jewish philosophy; his pupils included Baruch Spinoza and Moses Zacuto; he was a member of the religious court which pronounced the decree of excommunication against Spinoza, 1656. Works include: 'Giv'at Sha'ul', a collection of sermons (1645); 'Tratado da verdade da lei de Moiss' (1659, translated into Hebrew by Isaac Gomez de Gosa as 'Torat Mosheh'); died Amsterdam, 1660.
