AdminHistoryBorn in Dublin, 1740; went to England, c1751-1752; educated at St Paul's School; clerk in various government offices from 1756; continued to study independently; interested in diplomatic affairs; amanuensis to Pitt, 1761-1762; wrote anonymously on public questions; reputed author of the notorious Junius Letters, 1768-1772; travelled to India, 1774; became involved in the Hastings affair; left India, 1780; arrived back in England, 1781; MP; Whig; a reformer, and opponent of the slave trade; retired from Parliament, 1807; died, 1818. James Harris, 1st Earl of Malmesbury: born, 1746; diplomat; minister plenipotentiary to the French Republic, he was sent to Paris to negotiate terms of peace, but was unsuccessful, 1796, and a renewed attempt in Lille was also unsuccessful and he returned to England, 1797; created Earl of Malmesbury, 1800; died, 1820.
CustodialHistoryPart of the library of Charles Kay Ogden (1889-1957), linguistic psychologist, founder of the Orthological Institute and originator of the language system Basic English, whose interests in language systems are reflected in the subject matter of his collection, which comprised individual manuscripts and manuscript collections dating from the 14th to the 20th century.
AcquisitionPart of the C K Ogden Library acquired by UCL in 1953.
