AdminHistoryBorn 1784; first published his 'Juvenilia', 1801; an essayist, contributing to publications including the 'Traveller'; with his brother John, produced the liberal weekly 'The Examiner' from 1808; prosecuted three times, and convicted for an attack on the Prince Regent, 1812; an associate of the poets Shelley, Keats and Byron, and of many other literary figures; attacked by the Tory press; lived in Italy, 1821-1825; author of many essays, works of criticism, and other works, and published his 'Autobiography', 1850; endured financial problems for much of his life; died, 1859.
CustodialHistoryPart of the library of Charles Kay Ogden (1889-1957), linguistic psychologist, founder of the Orthological Institute and originator of the language system Basic English, whose interests in language systems are reflected in the subject matter of his collection, which comprised individual manuscripts and manuscript collections dating from the 14th to the 20th century.
AcquisitionPart of the C K Ogden Library acquired by UCL in 1953.
