AdminHistoryBorn at Cork, 1843; educated at Queen's College Cork and Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated, 1863; Professor of English Literature at Trinity College Dublin, 1867-1913; published an influential study of Shakespeare, 1875; an associate of Robert Browning and Walt Whitman; died in Dublin, 1913. Publications include: 'Shakspere, His Mind and Art' (1875); 'Poems' (1876); 'Shakspere Primer' (1877); 'Studies in Literature' (1878); 'Life of Shelley' (1886); 'Transcripts and Studies' (1888); 'New Studies in Literature' (1895); 'Essays, Modern and Elizabethan' (1910); 'A Woman's Reliquary' (poems, 1913); many editions of single plays by Shakespeare. CustodialHistoryPart of the library of Charles Kay Ogden (1889-1957), linguistic psychologist, founder of the Orthological Institute and originator of the language system Basic English, whose interests in language systems are reflected in the subject matter of his collection, which comprised individual manuscripts and manuscript collections dating from the 14th to the 20th century.
AcquisitionPart of the C K Ogden Library acquired by UCL in 1953.
