TitleGowers, Sir William Richard: 'A Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System' (volume 2, second edition): manuscript of unpublished revision
Datec1898-1899
DescriptionThe document consists of most of the pages from volume 2, second edition, published 1893, mounted on paper and divided into parts of the text; several groups of pages show [unpublished] revisions in the hand of Gowers. The revisions are mostly in ink; some also are in pencil; in some cases pencil corrections are overwritten in ink. There are some gaps in the run of pages from the text of the Manual and one overlap.
The manuscript is divided into 15 parts: the annotated portions are Parts 4, 6, 8 and 15.
Part 1 - part of page 543 on disseminated or insular sclerosis (uncorrected) [when found accompanied by a manuscript paper by Gowers, which was probably part of an early draft for the 1909 Hughlings Jackson lecture: now NHNN/RES/1/3.]
Part 2 - the title page and index of the Manual (uncorrected) identifying the work as the second edition of Volume 2, published 1893
Part 3 - pp142-168 (uncorrected)
Part 4 - pp168-213 (corrected, including a six-page inserted manuscript on nystagmus, forming a complete re-writing of the section on nystagmus in the Manual, pp207-211)
Part 5 - pp299-301 (uncorrected)
Part 6 - pp394-426 (corrected)
Part 7 - pp421-462 (uncorrected)
Part 8 - pp541-590 (inscribed in pencil 'condensed' on first sheet, corrected, including changes to section on insular sclerosis)
Part 9 - pp591-674 (uncorrected)
Part 10 - pp698-710 (uncorrected)
Part 11 - pp794-836 (uncorrected)
Part 12 - pp836-856 (uncorrected)
Part 13 - pp857-866 (uncorrected)
Part 14 - pp984-1030 (uncorrected)
