AdminHistoryMiss Fynes-Clinton was appointed Lady Superintendent by the Board of Management in February 1896 from a field of six candidates selected by a subcommittee. In making the appointment, however, the Board had overlooked the claims of an internal candidate, the matron Rachel Tweed. The Board then decided to overturn its decision and asked Miss Fynes-Clinton to resign in favour of Miss Tweed. Miss Fynes-Clinton agreed to do this, and the Board, in recognition of her decision asked her to accept a compensation payment of £100. Miss Fynes-Clinton then (March 1896) returned this amount in full as a donation to Hospital funds.
