AdminHistoryBorn Eileen Maud O'Shaughnessy in South Shields, 1905; educated at Sunderland High School; won a scholarship to St Hugh's College Oxford; received a degree in English, 1927; taught in a private girls' school; worked at a succession of temporary jobs; studied educational psychology at University College London, but did not complete her Master's degree; met Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell), 1935; they were married, 1936; visited Spain and Morocco with Orwell; worked for the Ministry of Food on a broadcast, The Kitchen Front, 1942-1944; adopted a child, named Richard Horatio Blair, 1944; died during an operation, 1945.
