| Arrangement | These files have undergone many re-numberings and different schemes of arrangement both before and after their transfer to the Institute of Education. One scheme involved using the page number from a hand-list. For example, papers relating to 'extraneous duties' were listed on page 79 so these papers were given references 79/1, 79/2 and so on. This scheme appears to have been superseded by one based on location or 'box number'. In this latter scheme, for example, papers on 'extraneous duties' were stored at location (31) and were referred to also as (31) 1, etc. The pre-existing handlist was subsequently annotated with these locations as well as with the page number. The two systems seem to have been in use side-by-side for some time. The 'box number' system is the one which was partially adopted for the subject index to the collection which was in use at the Institute of Education for some years (although there were many inconsistencies in its application) and which has been quoted in published sources. It has therefore been decided to base the system of arrangement adopted here on this 'box number' system. However, some numbers were used twice or even three times in the original scheme in use in the offices of the NUWT, since more than one category of material could be stored in a single box or at a single location. In the subject index in use at the Institute of Education each location was therefore subdivided by the use of a sub-number after a full-stop. These numbers have, so far as is possible, been retained in the list which follows. However, where known, all previous and alternative reference numbers have also been noted in the series descriptions. The arrangement and sub-numbering of the individual files within each section has been retained intact. |
