Armitage was a student on the UCL B.Sc. Microbiology course. After graduation in 1972 she went on to complete her Ph.D. research. She remained at UCL until 1985 when she moved to Oxford. She was appointed Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford in 1996.</dc:description>
