Special Committee International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (SC-IDNDR) The United Nations General Assembly designated the 1990s an International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction in Resolutions 42/169 (December 1987) and 43/202 (February 1989). At the 1990 ICSU General Assembly, Sofia, Bulgaria, 1-5 October, a new Special Committee of ICSU was set up to oversee ICSU contributions to the IDNDR. The first meeting of the Special Committee was held in Sofia, 5 and 6 October 1990. Lighthill was chairman of the Special Committee until 1 July 1995 when he was succeeded by H. Th. Verstappen.
