  <dc:title>Esther scroll</dc:title>
<dc:description>Parchment scroll of the Biblical book of Esther (megillat Esther מגילת אסתר) in non-pointed Hebrew (Ashkenazi block script).

Scroll consists of 4 membranes stitched together, with 2-3 columns of 23 lines of text. Some later pencil additions further into the scroll indicate chapter and verse, as well as adding pointing to some verses. Some staining, small tears, and small holes in the parchment membranes.
Enlarged letters of the tetragrammaton in acrostic form at the beginning of 4 consecutive words in chapter 5:4 and in reverse order at the end of 4 consecutive words in 5:13. Enlarged he (ה) in 1:6 and enlarged tav (ת) in 9:29. Enlarged words (the names of Haman’s sons) in 9:7-9 set in two columns. Small tav (ת) in the name Parshandatha in 9:7 and small shin (ש) in the name Parmashta in 9:9, but no small zayin (ז) or elongated waw (ו) in the name Vaizatha in 9:9, as might be expected.
Three decorative crowns (tagin) on gimel, zayin, nun, ayin, tsadi and shin (גזנעצש), but not on ṭet (ט) as would be expected. A single tag occurs on some examples of the letters bet, dalet, he, ḥet, kaf, mem sofit, resh, and tav (בדהחכםרת).
Faded Hebrew note on verso, begins: Katavti ṿe-natati le-B"Ḥ Lieb ben KM[…] Yitsaḳ […] ("I wrote and gave to creditor Lieb ben KM...Isaac...").
Handwritten notes on the verso: Presented to the B.T.S. by J.T. Thorneloe Leicester 1916; Robert Glennie; Date 5551 AD1791.
Printed note on verso: For the Bible Translation Society.

Box also also contains a Montefiore tribute.
