  <dc:description>Commonplace book compiled by Sir William Drake. Collection of proverbs and wisdom, many of which are from Italian works. Proverbs are takn from Aretino, Stefano Guazzo, Jacob Cats and Erasmus. A seleciton of "Italian provers with some sentences" is illustrated with references to Tacitus, Polybius and Machiavelli, Guicciardini, Scipione Ammirato and Bacon. Includes a short collection of notes "Of Negotiating" mainly by Bacon, and shome short notes from works by Cardinal Bentivolgio, Cardan, and Virgilio Malvezzi.
&lt;br /&gt;
The volume can be dated by two notes, of "Moneys received of Debts I left in England" dated 1 May 1644 and a rent debt of Lady Day 1643.  </dc:description>
