  <dc:description>Various articles and publicity relating to White Lion Street Free School.  This is divided into two folders. One folder is Open, the other folder is Restricted Access.

Folder 1 is Open and contains:
- An issue of Undercurrents magazine, number 36, October-November 1979. Contains an article on free schools by Nigel Wright, with a short section on White Lion by Anthea Baillie.
- An issue of Forum magazine, volume 32, number 3 (Summer  1990). Contains a review of Nigel Wright’s book, Free School: The White Lion Experience.
- A handwritten page headed “Maurice Punch – Guardian 1973”, with extracts from an article about free schools, alongside notes.
- A photocopy of an article from The Independent, 22 September 1989, stating that the White Lion Free School is facing closure.
- Extract from The Times Educational Supplement, 23 March 1984. Features an article on “Improving London’s Schools”, regarding a plan to improve schools produced by a committee of inquiry set up by the ILEA.

Folder 2 is Restricted Access and contains:
- A newspaper cutting of a letter from a parent of children at the school, to Councillor Mrs Cecilia McAskill, setting the record straight about the school.
- An article from The Guardian, 3 October 1989, about curriculum reforms at the White Lion Street Free School.
- A page from The Guardian, 10 April 1990, about the closure of the White Lion Free School. It mentions Nigel Wright’s book.
- Extract from The Weekly Educational Review, 17 May 1979, featuring an article about the school written by Nigel Wright.
- Folded leaflet headed “White Lion Street Free School – an inner city success story….?”. Includes an introduction describing the school and its history, paragraphs about the curriculum, meetings, becoming part of the ILEA, and finances, and personal experiences of a parent, member of staff, past pupil, and current students.
- An article about the school by Roy Kerridge, published in the Winter 1984 issue of The Salisbury Review. [See NW/2 for another copy.] The article is largely critical of the school and the behaviour of the children. There is a typed draft reply to this article, providing a rebuttal and correcting various statements made by Kerridge, as well as correspondence with Roger Scruton, editor of the Salisbury Review, and an amended copy of the draft. Includes a copy of the “Letters” page of the Salisbury Review, July 1984, with Nigel Wright’s letter printed, and a response by Roy Kerridge.
- A letter from Nigel Wright to the editor of The Guardian, dated 18 February 1985, regarding Roger Scruton’s defence of a headteacher after a slanderous article in The Guardian.
- An issue of Solidarity: A Journal of Libertarian Socialism, number 25/26 (Autumn 1990). Features an article about the closure of White Lion Street Free School, paying tribute to its achievements.
- A typed report entitled “The Case for a Free School Now”, providing arguments in favour of free schools. A handwritten note gives the author as Alison [Truefitt], c. spring 1972. [See NW/4, duplicate copy]</dc:description>
