The Institute of Jewish Studies was founded by Rabbi Dr Alexander Altmann in Manchester in 1954, following the destruction of Jewish centres of learning in Europe in World War II. The Institute was therefore created due to the need to train a new generation of Jewish scholars and educators. The Institute was moved from Manchester to UCL in 1959. Manfred Altmann became Honorary Secretary of the Institute, and took over as chairman from Lord Mishcon in 1988.
