Vladimir Bukovsky was born in Belebey, Bashkirian ASSR, Russian SFSR (now Bashkortostan), where his family was evacuated from Moscow during World War II. In 1959 he was expelled from his Moscow school for creating and editing an unauthorized magazine. He enrolled as a student of biology at Moscow University, before once again being expelled. Bukovsky organised poetry readings of unpublished poets and was arrested in 1963. He was interred in prisons and labour camps, as well as psychiatric hospitals. Amnesty International intervened on his behalf. After being expelled to Switzerland from the USSR in December 1976 he took up residency in the UK from 1977. He studied at Cambridge University and then took up an academic post at Stamford University, California. Bukovsky later returned to the United Kingdom, where he became a British citizen.
