He was also the president of the Progressive Education Association which became the US Section of the New Education Fellowship. 

He was born in White Plains, Georgia, USA. He graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and moved on to doing graduate work at John Hopkins University. He was briefly a school principal before returning to Mercer University. He resigned in 1906 after he became involved in a series of scandals and in 1908 moved to New York to study for his doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University where he met John Dewey. He was later the lecturer in the philosophy of Education, 1912-1937 when he retired. He was active in his retirement and led the New York Urban League, the Progressive Education Association, and the John Dewey Society. </Nationality>
