Corporate Geffrye Museum 1914- Opened in 1914 by the London County Council in the former almshouses of the Ironmongers' Company. It was open as a museum related to the local furniture industry at the suggestion of the leading members of the Arts & Crafts Movement. In 1935 the Museum was managed by the Education Committee of the London County Council and the museum's focus became to provide educational services for schools. The exhibitions were rearranged into rooms reflecting periods of design from 1600 to provide an educational resource for local school children looking at domestic history. In 1965 the museum was run by the Greater London Council (GLC) and by the 1980s was managed by the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA). After the abolition of ILEA in 1990 the museum became an independent charitable Trust in 1991.
