Corporate Kenwood House

[1600s]- Originally built in thwe 17th century. In 1754 it was bought by William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. Between 1764-1779 it was remodelled by the classically inspired architect, Robert Adam. In 1925 Cecil Guinness, first Earl of Iveagh, bought the house from the Manfield family and used it to house his collection of paintings by Rembrandt, Turner, Reynolds, Gainsborough and Vermeer. On his death in 1927, Iveagh donated the house, his collections and the estate to the nation. The house was administered as a museum/gallery by the London County Council and later the Greater London Council. In 1974 it became the home of the Suffolk Collection, a collection of paintings, predominantly family portraits was passed down through the Suffolk and Berkshire families from the 1580s, which had been donated to the nation by the Countess of Suffolk on her death in 1968. In the late 1970s-1980 it was one of the houses of the GLC where Gene Adams, ILEA Museums Education Advisor, carried out various educational project.
