Person George Dance, the Younger

1741-1825 George Dance the Younger was an English architect and surveyor. He was educated at St Paul's School in London, before he was sent to Italy to sudy archtecture. In 1768 he succeed his father as the City of London Survyor. His major works include Newgate Prison (1770), the Royal College of Surgeons, th front of the Guildhall london, St Luke's Hospital, the Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall, the library at Lansdowne House, the Common Council Chamber and Chamberlain's Court at the Guildhall, Ashburnham Place, and Stratton Park, most of which have since been demolished. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768, and its professor of architecture, from 1798 to 1805.
