1735-1803 He was born in Belgium in 1735. He worked in Paris as a mathematical-instrument maker before moving to London in 1760. He was an engineer and was responsible for several invention including the roller-skates, barrel organ, and a compund harpsichord. He also created other musical instruments, clocks and watches, and automaton and displayed in inventions in 'Merlin's Mechanical Museum' in Hanover Square, London. His portrait was painted by Thomas Gainsborough in 1871, and is now on display in Kenwood House.
