Corporate Christ Church, Spitalfields 1729- Built under the Act of Parliament of 1711 which required the building of fifty new churches to serve the new populations on the fringes of London. It was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and built between 1714-1729. The church was altered in 1866 by Ewan Christian, who removed the the galleries, blocked in the windows at the corners of the central space, and lowered the main windows. By 1960 the church was almost derelict and services were held in the Church Hall. In 1976 the Friends of Christ Church Spitalfields was formed to help renovate the church. Service were held in the church from 1987, and the building was completely renovated to its pre-1850 design in 2004 The church was the location of an exhibition of the history and architecture of the area in 1979 organised by the Save Our Spitalfields group with Gene Adams, ILEA Museum Education Advisor.
