Person William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield

1705-1793 He was educated in Perth, Scotland before moving to London to be educated at Westminster School. He graduate from Christ Church, Oxford and was called to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1730. He became MP for Boroughbridge in 1742 and was appointed the Solicitor General. In 1754 he became the Attorney General, before become the Lord Chief Justice a few months later. As the Lord Chief Justice he modernised English Law and the English courts system. He is perhaps best known for his judgment in Somersett's Case, where he held that slavery was unlawful in England.
