Institute of Education, 1987- 1987- GB/366/15 The Murray Report on the Governance of the University of London (1972) recommended that, in view of its size and functions, the Institute should be admitted as a School of the University, incorporated by Royal Charter. In 1973 the University of London approved in principle the admission of the Institute of Education as a School of the University and a Charter and Statutes were drafted to replace the Scheme which had operated since 1949. In 1980 both the Senate and the Court approved these and they were submitted to the Privy Council together with e apetition to HM the Queen. At a meeting of the Privy Council on 10 June 1987 HM the Queen approved the grant of a Charter to the Institute and the Institute was admitted as a School of the University of London in the Faculties of Education, Science and Economics as from 1 August 1987. HRH the Pronciess Royal, Chancellor of the University of London, presented the Royal Charter to the Institute at a special ceremony on 1 June 1988. Under the Charter the Council became the governing body of the Institute, with final responsibility for all matters of policy and major decisions, thus taking over finally from the Committee of Management which had been established in 1949 and the Senate became the formal academic authority of the Institute, taking over from the Central Academic Board. In addition an Academic Board was established which consisted of the whole of the academic, research and library staff and others which was given an advisory role to Senate.
