Central College Dates of existence: 1932-1948 Places of existence: Until 1938 the Institute remained in the Southampton Row buildings. It moved into new buildings attached to Senate House in 1938 but in 1939 on the outbreak of war it was evacuated to University College, Nottingham, returning to temporary accommodation in London in 1943 and resuming occupation of Senate House in 1945. Mandate, function and sphere of activity: The Institute carried on the functions of the London Day Training College, in training teachers and offering higher degrees in education. In 1933 a Department of Child Development was added and in 1934 a Division of Oversea Students was established to cover the needs of students from abroad. Relationships: In 1932 the London Day Training College became a central activity of the University of London and was re-named the Institute of Education.
