He went on to teach at various schools in Aberdeen and Glasgow. Adams also attended classes at Glasgow University from which he graduated in 1883 with a first class degree in Mental and Moral Sciences, and at the Glasgow School of Art, where he gained an Art Teacher's Certificate. In 1883 he was given the post of lecturer at the Aberdeen Free Church Training College and in 1890 became Rector of the College. In 1898 he was appointed as Rector of the Glasgow Free Church Training College and took a lectureship in Education at the University of Glasgow. In 1902 he visited McGill University in Canada and studied Canadian educational institutions, before being appointed at the University of London's first Professor of Education and the first Principal of the London Day Training College. He retired from the College in 1922 and in 1923 he accepted an appointment at the University of California at Los Angeles, combising this with visits to other American universities. He died in California in 1934
