Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) is an independently run but centrally supported group of schools initially created in 1872 to advance the education of women. By 2007 the GDST was running 29 schools located across England and Wales.

Maria Grey and her sister Emily Shirreff found the National Union for improving the Education of Women of All Classes (also known as the Women's Education Union) in 1871 to establish good and cheap day schools for all classes above the level of elementary education. The presented a scheme to form a limited liability company in 1871 and through subscriptions they founded the Girls' Public Day School Company Ltd (GPDSC) in June 1872. The Company was to create academic high schools for girls of all classes where they were most needed, funded by shares taken up by local people. School fees were kept low and schools were expected to become self-supporting, through the GPDSC Council maintained overall control of curriculum and finance. The first school opened at Durham House, Chelsea in January 1873 (later transferred to Kensington) with 16 pupils. By 1875 the Company had opened 9 schools attended by a thousand pupils. The schools were to be girls high schools, though many had co-educational preparatory departments.

From 1875-1901 the articles of association were amended to enable the Company to slowly move toward becoming a charity and to receive grants from the Board of Education, who wanted to give public grants to only non-profit organisations. In 1902 the Board of Education threaten to withdraw any grants they gave to the GPDSC as they were a limited liability company. In 1906 the Company was reconstituted as the as the Girls' Public Day School Trust Ltd (GPDST), a limited company with charitable status. The new constitution also required that the Trust must be wound-up as a limited company by 1 January 1956 if the Trust failed to make an acceptable offer to buy the whole of the existing share capital.

In 1944 the GPDST joined in the Government's new Direct Grant Scheme to help keep the school fees low. The GPDST schools remained academically selective, and reverted to full independence when the scheme was discontinued in 1976.

In 1946 a group of shareholders voice their intention to wind up the trust and sell the schools if their shares were not paid for by 1956. After several attempts a new scheme was accepted in 1950, saving the Trust from liquidation. 'Limited' was dropped from the title of the Trust and it had to make repayments to its shareholders.

In 1980 the Trust applied for the Government's Assisted Place Scheme for all schools and registered as a private company under the Companies Act 1980. In 1998 the word 'Public' was dropped from the name of the organisation and it became the Girls' Day School Trust. </Nationality>
