Nothing is known of her early life except she possibly ran her own school in Guernsey.

In 1873, she was appointed the first head mistress of Notting Hill High School in 1873, which was the second school opened by the Girls' Public Day School Company. Initially she taught nearly all the girls at the school and by the end of 1874 had sent 6 of her pupils in for the Cambridge senior local examinations. She concentrated upon academic education for the girls and was against non-academic subject such as needlework.

In 1887 she was one of the people involved in a memorial sent to the University of Cambridge asking for the admission of women for degrees. In 1894, of behalf of the Association of Head Mistresses of Endowed and Proprietary Schools, she gave evidence to the Bryce commission on secondary education. She was also president of the Association and a member of the Council of the Maria Grey Training College. She retired in 1900 and died on 20 October 1917. </Nationality>
