She was educated at Clapham High School and Royal Holloway College, London. In 1918 she graduated from Holloway with a BA in classics. She taught at Acton Boys' School, 1918-1920; Roedean School, Brighton, 1930-1931. In 1931 she was appointed head of Kensington High School, owned by the Girls' Public Day School Trust, and it 1939 she transferred to Sutton High School, where she remained until her retirement in 1959. 

Charlesworth was the president of the Association of Head Mistresses, 1948-1950, and chair of the joint committee of the four secondary associations, 1952-1954. She was also on the executive committee of the Royal Academy of Dancing and was a member of the Professional Classes Aid Council and the Soroptomists. She was the Director of the Thomas Wall Trust and was appointed a CBE in 1954. 

She was also interested in international educational development and a member of the London assembly which led to the founding of UNESCO. In her retirement she travelled around the world promoting education and the Council of Education in World Citizenship. 

She died on 20 November 1970.</Nationality>
