Little is known of her early education except she attended a boarding school at Sandwell Hall in Staffordshire. She was appointed a governess to the children on Edward North Buxton after 1872 until she was admitted to Girton College, Cambridge in 1880. In 1883 she became an assistant teacher at the Girls' Public Day School Company (GPDSC), Oxford High School. By this time she had changed the spelling of her surname to Gadesden. She was also involved in the formation of the Assistant Mistress' Association in 1884. In the same year she was appointed the head of a new girls' high school in Leamington Spa (renamed Kingsley School in 1949). In 1886 she returned to the GPDSC as the head of Blackheath High School. She was a member of the Association of Head Mistresses and its president from 1905-1907. In 1918 she was a member of the Secondary Schools Examination Council. She retired in 1919 and died after a short illness in May 1934.

Florence was close to her sister Lizzie (d.1917), was also a head of the GPDSC school in Norwich from 1884-1907. </Nationality>
