Person Lucy Soulsby (1856-1917)

1856-1927 Lucy Helen Muriel Soulsby was born in London in 18 July 1856 and emigrated with her family to New Zealand in 1860. Her mother, who ran a small school, provided all of Lucy's education. The family returned to England after her father's death in 1867 and lived at Salcombe, Devon from 1879-1884, where Lucy studied independently for a number of public examinations. In 1885 she was a teacher at Cheltenham Ladies College until she was appointed the head of the Oxford High School, a Girls' Public Day School Company (later Trust) school, in 1887. She sat on the Council of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, from 1889-1895. From 1897 she was the headmistress of a private school for girls at Manor House, Brondesbury, until her retirement in 1915.
