Person Edith Margaret Hastings 1851-1941

1851-1941 Edith Margaret Hastings was born on 9 September 1851 in Huddersfield. She was educated at the local church school and went to a boarding school in Richmond at the age of 16. After Richmond she went to Geneva to teach English to the children of the head of a school where she studied French, music and singing. On her return to England she passed her Higher Local Examinations and began to teach in a school in Chelsea. She was appointed an assistant mistress at Nottingham High School, which had been newly opened by the Girls' Public Day School Company (later Trust) and later became head of the school in 1876. In 1880 she transferred to Wimbledon High School where she remained until 1908. After leaving Wimbledon she became an Inspector of girls' secondary schools for the Board of Education and was also Manager of the Chelsea London County Council Schools. She remained close to the Girls' Day School Trust; she briefly returned from retirement to teach at Wimbledon after a fire destroyed the school in 1917 and was a member of the Council from 1919-1924.
