Person Helen Maud Sheldon

1859-1945 Helen Maud Sheldon was born in Handsworth, Birmingham, on 15 October 1859. She was educated at Handsworth Ladies' College and went on to Girton College, Cambridge. She first taught at Kensington High School, a school run by the Girls' Public Day School Company (later Trust) from 1881. In 1884 she returned to Girton to lecture on mathematic, but in 1888 she returned to teaching at Blackheath High School (another Trust school). She was appointed the head of Dover High School in 1898 and Sydenham High School in 1900. She retired in 1917 and continued to live in the Sydenham area and was elected to the borough council of Lewisham. She was the Treasurer of the Association of Head Mistresses from 1905-1909 and a member of the Girton Council, 1910-1919.
