She was education at the Methodist College, Belfast; Queen's University, Belfast; and Girton College, Cambridge. She graduated from Girton in 1888 and later gained a MA from Trinity College, Dublin in 1907.  She was an assistant mistress at Blackheath High School, a school run by the Girls' Public Day School Company (later Trust) and was transferred to the headship of Putney High School in 1900. In 1911 she was appointed head of King Edward VI's high school in Birmingham. She was also the president of the Head Mistresses Association from 1919-1921. She was appointed OBE for work in helping Belgian refugees during World War One. In 1925 she was appointed the mistress of Girton College. She was a member of the council of Birmingham University, and on the governing bodies of several schools. She retired in 1931 and returned to Northern Ireland. In the same year she was appointed a CBE. In 1932 she was given an honorary LLD by the Queen's University, Belfast.  She died in Northern Ireland in 17 March 1951. </Nationality>
