Person Maria Beard (1885-1958)

1885-1958 Marian Gertrude Beard was born on 4 March 1885. She was educated at Alexandra School and College, Dublin and Somerville College, Oxford. After graduating in 1909, she was taught at Nottingham High School. From 1911 she was the lecturer of modern language at Girton College, Cambridge before coming the Tutor in Germanic Philology, Somerville College in 1915. In 1918 she left Somerville and worked for the Ministry of Food and was later awarded an OBE for her work. She left the Ministry in 1920 and became the head of Putney High School, a school run by the Girls' Public Day School Trust. In 1930 she became the head of Crofton Grange School, where she remained until her retirement in 1946.
