Person Ethel Gwatkin, c1876-1952

c1876-1952 Ethel Ruth Gwatkin grew up in Cambridge where she was largely educated by her father the historian Henry Gwatkin, who was the Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Cambridge University. She was later educated at Perse School for Girls in Cheltenham; Cheltenham Ladies College, where she graduated with a University of London degree; and Girton College, Cambridge. In 1899 she began her teaching career at Roedean School, Brighton and later became a lecturer on teaching mathematics at Maria Grey Training College, where she also taught at Brondesbury and Kilburn High Schools. Around 1908 she left her posts to travel around Europe and visited schools in Germany. In 1910 she was appointed head of Queen Mary High School in Liverpool and in 1923 she was appointed the head of Streatham Hill High School, a school run by the Girls' Public Day School Trust. She retired in 1938 after overseeing the merger of Streatham with Clapham High School to form Streatham Hill and Clapham High School.
