He was educated at Swansea Grammar School and trained as a lawyer in the chambers of his uncle, James Lewis Knight-Bruce.  He was called to the bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1937, but he retired in 1843.  In 1845 he moved to his family's estate in Dyffryn Aberdâr and began his political career. In 1852 he became the MP for Merthyr Tudful and steadily made his way through parliament as under-secretary at the Home Office, 1862-1864; vice-president of the committee of Council on Education, 1864-1866; Home Secretary, 1868-1873. He also sat on select committee on endowed schools in 1859. In 1873 he became the first Baron Aberdare. He was made a GCB on 7 January 1885. Aberdare died of influenza in London on 25 February 1895.

He a member of the Council of the Girls Public Day School Company (later Trust), 1876-1879, and became its president in 1881. His daughter, Alice Moore Bruce, was also connected to the Girls' Public Day School Trust. </Nationality>
