He was styled Viscount Althorp until 1857. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College. Cambridge. He graduated with an MA in 1857. In the same year his father died and he became the 5th earl of Spencer. He was made a knight of the Garter in 1864. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1868 until Gladstone's government lost power in 1874. In 1880, when Gladstone returned to power, Spencer was appointed Lord President of Ireland until 1885. He was the First Lord of the Admiralty from 1892-1895. In 1902 he became the liberal leader of the House of Lords. He was rumoured to be the party's candidate for prime minister but retired from politics in 1905 after a major stroke. He died in August 1910. He was the President of the Girls' Public Day School Trust from 1896-1908.</Nationality>
