Person May Dorothy Yardley

1904-2001 May Dorothy Yardley was educated at St Olave's School and St Saviour's school before studying at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. After graduating she gained diplomas in Education and Biblical Studies with the University of London. She taught at North London Collegiate School until she became an Assistant Lecturer in Education at King's College London for 4 years. She also lectured at Greystokes Place Training College before teaching at a secondary school in Putney. During this period she also edited several books, 'Of Ghostes and Spirites Walking by Nyght' for the Shakespeare Association (1929); 'The Child's Book of Verse' (Teacher's Book) with Elizabeth Bright (1931): an edition of John Newman's 'Ideas of a university' (1931). She became a teacher at Sydenham High School during World War Two and became its headmistress in 1942 until she retired in 1966. She travelled around the world and spent both her grace terms with the Trust on Cargo boats, firstly on the Mediterranean to the Black Sea in 1952 and across the Atlantic through the Panama Canal and down the east coast of South America in 1960. She was also involved in the Christian Missionary Society and spent 6 months in India.
