She was educated at St Swithun's School, Winchester and and Lady Margaret Hall,  Oxford. 
She first taught at Sherbourne School for Girls, 1944-1946, before returning to study at Lady Margaret Hall. In 1949 she maried Geoffrey Warnock. From 1949-1966 she was tutor in philosophy at St Hugh's College, Oxford. In 1966 she was appointed the head of the Girls' Public Day School Trust's (GPDST) Oxford High School until 1972. After leavng the school she was research fellow and tutor at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, 1972-1976, senior research fellow at St. Hugh's College, Oxford, 1976-1984, and mistress of Girton College, Cambridge,  1985-1991. From 2000 she was s a visiting professor of rhetoric at Gresham College, London.

Warnock has sat on various committees in her carreer includingthe Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) 1973-1981; chair of the committee of enquiry into special education, 1974-1978. She was created a life peer in 1985 as Baroness Warnock, of Weeke in the City of Winchester. From 1990-2002 she was a member of the Council of the GPDST. </Nationality>
