Corporate Battersea College of Education 1892-1981 The London County Council gave special grant to the Department of Women's Studies at Battersea Polytechnic Institute to open a teacher training school in domestic economy. The first students started in 1894 and the course was recognized as a teach training school by the Board of Education in 1895. After World War Two the London County Council took over from Battersea Polytechnic and re-designated the department as Battersea College of Domestic Science in 1948. In 1963 the College acquired a new site in Roehampton which became the Battersea Training College for Primary Teachers. The College also became a constituent college of the University of London, Institute of Education. The College became part of the Battersea College of Education in 1964. In 1976 it was proposed that Battersea should merge with the Polytechnic of South Bank (later South Bank University) and by 1981/1982 the students had transferred to the South Bank Campus.
