Corporate Sydenham High School 1887- Sydenham High School opened the 22 February 1887 at 72 West [later Westwood] Hill, Sydenham, London, under headmistress Miss Irene Thomas, with 20 pupils. The building had formerly been the Loughton Hall Hotel. In 1889 a kindergarten was opened and a six form was added to the school in 1891. In 1890 the kindergarten and junior forms moved into Fairlight House, which was adjacent to the school. In 1910 70 & 72 Longton Grove were converted into a home arts department which educated girls at the school and students over 17. By the 1930s the lease of the school site was due to expire and the building could not be extended any further. The school acquired a new property called 'Horner Grange' on Westwood Hill which was opened as the new home of the school in 1934. During World War II the school was evacuated to Brighton and Hove High School, but later returned to Sydenham in 1940 after the government called for the evacuation of all children from Brighton. In 1946 a separate Junior school was opened in Longton Grove and moved again in 1951 to 15 Westwood Hill.
